sage restoration winter home tips

Here are some tips for getting your home ready for winter. Some things may need to be done by a professional, but there are a few simple things you can do on your own.

Here are a few things you will need to get started. Caulking and weather stripping. You can start by caulking exterior of the trim around your windows. Add weather stripping around any doors that do not close tightly. Make sure all water lines are well insulated, so you don’t end up with any frozen busted pipes. Have you chimney inspected and/or cleaned if you plan on using for the winter months. When using your chimney make sure you have a fire place screen with access doors (easy to add wood). It will keep the wood from falling out that easily start a fire.  Remember to never leave a fire unattended.

Make sure gutters have been cleaned and are free from debris. Clogged gutters can cause major water intrusion into your home if water is not directed out and away from your home. Water can begin to pool around your foundation and enter your basement. Water can also freeze up in your gutters and ice damming can occur which can cause water intrusion into your attic or walls.

Make sure your smoke alarms are working or have back up batteries if necessary.  Also make sure space heaters do not have frayed cords and replace old space heaters for new ones that have a safety feature that turns  them off automatically. Keep space heaters free from anything flammable like bedding, clothing etc. and they are turned off when you are not home.
These are just a few tips to help keep your home insulated and safe for this upcoming winter. In the event your home does suffer water or fire damage remember to Call Sage…You will be glad you did!
