Take a step back and take a good look at your finished basement and the items in it. How much do you think it would take to replace your finished basement? Trust me depending on the square footage of your basement, it will be pretty expensive to get it back to pre-loss conditions. So make sure you carry enough insurance to cover the dry out of the structure, insurance to cover your valuables (contents), and replacement of materials.
Now we will be moving up to the main level of your home, walk around and check for water spots on your ceiling. If there are any visible signs of water intrusion, you may need to have your roof inspected or your gutters may be full.
Things to have handy when the storms do start to roll in : Candles, matches/lighter, battery powered radio, dry goods and water. Stay safe during fall storms.

You should make sure you have a sump pump rider, if your sump pump happens to fail, due to having no back up battery when the power goes out, you want to be covered. Also it’s a good idea to carry flood insurance and/or install a backup battery on your sump pump for those occasions when the power does goes out.
